Our dear friend has a 2011 Countryman with a brake problem. Grinding. Front left. She had a friend replace brake parts recently, but I am told that one or more special tools are involved and in the course of events, the ABS sensor got damaged or destroyed. Any experience with this? Do we need to fly in a Mini brake specialist from England with a steamer trunk full of tools?

I imagine replacing the sensor is similar on the Countryman to this:

https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/MINI_R56/11-BRAKES-ABS_Wheel_Speed_Sensor_Replacement/11-BRAKES-ABS_Wheel_Speed_Sensor_Replacement.htm

That being said, how the heck did it get damaged?  It’s not physically a part of the brake caliper or rotor. Is she experiencing Christmas lights on the dash?  Did the grinding at least go away?

The sensor is a wear item and should be replaced with pad s if the light ever came on. Super chea p from rock auto.

I’ve done brakes on my MINIs many times, no harder than any other car.

I am not sure. I knew that she was having some issues and then we didn’t see her for a while and today we drove her to work because it’s still an issue.

To your question, yes, there is an ABS indication on the cluster. Another Op in this space says that the ABS sensor is a wear item.

I had a 2013 Mini with JCW brakes and found the job quite easy. Nothing unique. The rears had the tricky self adjusting caliper that you needed to screw back in  when replacing the pads.

It’s true that the ABS sensor is a “wear item”, and the wires do get brittle over time. The replacement part isn’t terribly expensive and/or hard to DIY.

Is it a pad wear sensor?  ABS sensors don’t typically contact anything to wear down.

There are the wear sensors which you’ll need to replace or bypass as they’re pretty much impossible to get off without breaking. You can cut the old sensor off somewhat near the connector and solder the wires together and it will work, but the insulation is so tough it’s probably easier to just replace it properly.

The brake wear countdown on the tach display can be reset with a little voodoo, just search for it, but it won’t reset if the sensor isn’t in place.

Ah yes I didn’t read that well... The sensor that you replace is a pad wear sensor not abs...

I’m still trying to determine what all is going on. She’s been to one shop already to the tune of $1,400 and she has an estimate for almost twice that. As I piece together what she tells me that actually makes sense, it sounds like a sticky caliper, apart from the ABS thing. The car owner is a dear, hard working friend who does not happen to know a thing about cars. So I’ma see if I can get this sorted for her.

The shop is saying that the person who did the brakes on the front may have damaged the ABS in the process of pushing the caliper back in and that this is keeping the brakes from releasing, leading to extreme premature wear. I’m like, Huh?  He has quoted a new ABS unit.

Not gonna say impossible but it’s never happened to me. Not sure what to say, it’s beyond my knowledge.

check the wheel hub and bearing while you’rein there if it’s time for replacement the wheel speed sensor won’t pick anything up usually
